Peace Education in España by Natalia Siegel

There are plenty of strong institutes for the study, research and practical application of peace throughout Spain.  My favorite was Escuelas de la Paz-the organization that worked not only in Spain but also in Colombia on creating a network for education campuses.  FORO 2010-will be the International Forum for Peace and Education in Santiago de Compestela.  It will be held from December 3-10, 2010 and looks AWESOME. I’m thinking, field trip?

  • The EU Peacebuilding Partnership
    • Created by the European Union Commission to develop the capacity of its potential partners to respond to crisis situations worldwide.
      • Capacity building for relevant organizations in pre-crisis situations
      • Provide mediation/conflict resolution services
      • Address inter-community tensions
      • Address measures for improving post-conflict and post-disaster  recovery
    • Types of organizations eligible for support under this instrument are mainly specialist NGOs but also UN and regional organizations aka African Union
  • Escuela de Paz; Bilbao escueladepaz.org
    • ‘A place for discovery and dialogue; institute for formation/investigation; team of advisers; place for mediation and intervention; instrument of analysis and critique; works on sustainable rights and the democratic citizen with a civic ethic based on tolerance and inter cultural solidarity.’
    • The space is a safe zone, “a space for reflection, participation, elaboration and diffusion of the peace culture.”
    • Looks to combine theoretical and pedagogical practices with a permanent interrelation with the education community; it needs to be a priority put into practice through demands, suggestions and creative alternatives.
    • School of Peace in Pais Vasco is a place where the extension of the culture of peace should attend specific problems of enormous gravity (terrorism in Pais Vasco) and its affects on all society.  This context requires intense labor in the active defense of human rights in all social spheres.
    • Education as a space of specialization learning, fortmation of knowledge for the citizens with personal autonomy and the capactiy for critical analysis.  It should be contributing actively to the formation of the culture of peace for boys/girls.  Education serves as an effective antidote against violent options and as an incentive for formenting the rebirth for the victims of violence.
